What We Know About Jihad al-Shamie, this Manchester Synagogue Attacker
Among local residents, Jihad al-Shamie seemed to lead a fairly ordinary life: a new father who exercised with dumbbells and frequently blocked parking spaces in front of the home he shared with his family.
Born to a trauma surgeon, Shamie was thought to experience a positive upbringing, with brothers coming after him who eventually built successful careers in IT and medicine development.
However, after his death after carrying out a violent act against a synagogue, a more complete understanding has been revealed. It has been learned that Shamie was already a bankrupt, previously sentenced for petty crimes and an alleged rapist when he set upon worshippers marking Yom Kippur.
Early Years Appearing Ordinary
Jihad al-Shamie had what appeared to be a conventional upbringing in Manchester in the 1990s. In home videos recorded to send to his grandfather in Syria, he holds a feline in the rear yard, telling his father he wants to feed it; elsewhere he helps his sibling on a outdoor recreational item.
Shamie shared his childhood with two younger brothers, the household taking excursions to local amusement center, wildlife attraction and the Trafford Centre, and the children participated in school nativity plays at Christmas.
Where they once lived, opposite North Manchester general hospital where Shamie’s dad had his occupation, neighbors described a “ordinary kid” who was part of a “nice family””.
He would interact positively with peers on the street, and the single odd behavior a neighbor mentioned was that he passed much of his time playing on a handheld computer game – enough that it resulted in visual strain.
“The family seemed fine, the father worked over the road, he appeared pleasant enough, frequently engaged in conversation. The household appeared respectable, the mom often talked with neighbors. The boy would play games, he would spend entire days playing, he had a noticeable blinking habit.”
‘A Typical Individual’
Those residing near his home in Prestwich characterized him as a “simple, regular individual” who would regularly train in his outdoor space, lifting sets of weights, with a neighbor mentioning he often parked inconveniently in front of her home.
The family are believed to have moved to the attached residence, approximately two miles away from the scene of the attack, approximately fifteen years back, when Shamie was about to turn 20. While the brothers were growing up, the household resided in the adjacent area.
Offspring of an Emergency Doctor
The parent, Faraj al-Shamie, journeyed internationally as a trauma surgeon, practicing in dangerous regions worldwide, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, such as the Red Cross international branch, and received instruction from famous doctor David Nott in the Iraqi city of Mosul.
Family Statement
Faraj al-Shamie has dissociated the household from his offspring's assault, publishing a message through social media that read: “The news from Manchester about the assault directed against a Hebrew temple has been a deeply disturbing for our family.
“Our family unit in the UK and abroad vehemently denounces this heinous act, which was aimed at harmless, non-combatant individuals. We entirely dissociate our family from this attack and convey our profound dismay and grief concerning the incident. We offer our condolences to those affected and their relatives, and we wish them fortitude and solace.”
Private Situation
Shamie had previously worked as a tutor, providing lessons in English and programming. Yet, records showed him jobless in state bankruptcy files which showed he turned to a debt relief order last September while living at the family home. Just one month later, his dad uploaded an image of him with a newborn, labeling the image “Wonderful New Grandchild”.
Previous Legal Issues
It was revealed that Shamie was on police bail for rape when he steered his modest automobile into worshippers at Heaton Park shul. The exact date is uncertain the reported incident took place but it is believed to have occurred recently. He was under active investigation by regional authorities.
He had been in trouble before, according to sources, who mentioned his previous convictions for further petty crimes. He was not, however, on the radar by anti-terrorism units or intelligence agencies until Thursday.
Radicalisation
After the assault occurred, authorities have been examining all aspects of his background to determine which influences directed him on the road to extremism. This involves reviewing communication data, checking the names of friends or associates, and analyzing his online activity.
He appears to have been fixated on the plight of Muslims in parts of the Middle East, particularly in recent years in Gaza. An online presence, thought to be his has a firearm as its main image, paired with botanical elements, and what appears to be a copy of the Qur’an.
A single post on the inactive social media profile references the bombing of Manbij in Syria in 2016, and requests heavenly intervention to “oppose those who wronged and killed them.”
