Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Squad Versus Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-game ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise selection.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the ODI side following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia search for a answer to their opening batting issues.
Bowling Additions and Fitness News
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from October 29.
