‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic
The debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta featured in the UK, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against German opponents at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he scored. On his next visit he took the field in British turf, against the English side two months later, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he did it once more. As he revisited to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did their duty: they substituted him.
“I got well angry,” the forward admits, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We went to play United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the training ground, the city, the morning session is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and another trip to the UK, now to face Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. This is proving a difficult season for the team, partially owing to the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in Europe. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway accompanied by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he states.
He considered it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as something positive because it made me change the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it aids growth. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then return home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. The striker moved in tears in that year, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, at times, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
