Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the squad's ten-game without a victory start to the top-flight campaign.

Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous links to the team - are part of the names to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.

The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.

However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.

The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.

Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a shock choice given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.

The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
